Anneken Farm | Alpacas

Alpacas are part of the camel (camelid) family. It is estimated that there are about 3.5 million alpacas in the Andean highlands, mostly in Peru. Since they were originally imported into the United States of America in 1984, their numbers in North America have increased from a few alpacas in zoos and private collections to well over 20,000. Alpacas are popular for their luxurious fiber and as pet, show, and investment animals.

In Canada, alpacas are shorn once a year and their fiber is processed into a number of products, such as hats, scarves, throws, mittens, gloves, coats, sweaters, etc.

Alpaca fleece is a silky, natural fiber. It is softer and 7 times warmer than sheep wool and contains no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic.

Considering their profit potential, alpacas are a unique investment opportunity for small farms, as well as adorable, peaceful, easy-to-maintain, low-cost farm pets.
